How to Tell if Your Roof Was Done Right

Just like with car repairs, many people often find themselves with a lack of knowledge when it comes to roofing and isn’t sure what a proper job should look like. Getting a roof repaired or installed is expensive in many cases, and you will want to make sure that your money is spent on a quality roof. Here are some signs that your roof was done correctly.

Proper Amount of Layers

To someone unfamiliar with roofing, this might sound strange, there is only one layer of shingles, right? Contractors sometimes do not remove old shingles to put on the new ones. This is not always a problem, but it can be if they become over-layered.

The proper amount of layers is two or less. This is something that roofers will do to cut costs and to end up with a little bit more money in their pockets, and can be a sign that your roofing was not done correctly. You should check the quality of the shingles, the number of nails placed, and other things.

Underlayment

Underlayment is likely a term that is not familiar to most people without roofing experience. Underlayment is a waterproof laminate that is supposed to be applied straight to your roof and then has the shingles added on after.

Underlayment is an easy way that your roofing was done with care, as an absence may show that corners were cut on the job. This can often be overlooked by a customer because once the shingles are on, the underlayment is no longer visible.

Nailing

Having the proper number of nails per shingle is also a sign of having your roofing done right. This is an easy way for an untrained person to tell if your roofing was done correctly. The proper amount of nails per shingle is four nails, but this can vary.

Having four nails is needed for regular homes that are not in an extreme weather conditioned area. If you live in a place where you experience extreme wind, your roofer should be placing six nails per shingle. This gives your shingles less of a chance of damage in a storm.

Making Sure Your Roofing is Even

This, like nailing, is an easy way for an untrained person to tell if their roofing was done correctly. To clarify, you want to make sure that the roofing is even and not bumpy, with the shingles placed evenly.

In contrast, the roofing only needs to be even on the front and sides. Therefore, if the corners of your roof are not matching up correctly, that is not necessarily an issue.

Visibility Check

A visibility check is done to determine the quality of the roofing material. This can be performed a couple of weeks after getting your roofing done as long as there was not a major storm between getting your roofing done and the time of checking it.

There are a couple of key things that you should keep in mind while checking your roof. For starters, if there have not been any major storms, you should not see much if any erosion of your shingles.

Another key point is to check to make sure that all your shingles are still intact. At this point, none of your shingles should have fallen off if the job was done correctly. This is a telltale sign that your roofing was not done properly.
